Introduction[]

The revolutions of 1848 are defeated by the European states, leaving afoot many now defunct monarchies and maintaining the unity of the Austrian Empire who, in 1866, defeats Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War and asserts its dominance in the German Confederation. The next century is marked by the dominance of the Habsburgs and their conquest of the Balkans, as well as the ubiquity of monarchy. When most American colonies had gained their independence, European countries turned to Africa and Asia and rapidly colonized many areas of both continents.

The current year is 1970. The world is beginning to recover from the crippling economic crisis that began 35 years ago with the eruption of the Great War and subsequent collapse of the Russian Empire. When troops began to retreat after the 1952 Treaty of Neumarkt an Mieresch the world's banks were empty. Inflation rose to unprecedented levels in the next decade, and international unrest caused the unorganized July Revolution in 1959, establishing democracy around the world. The members of the Austrian-led Imperial Alliance mostly quelled protests with military force, in some cases establishing a constitutional monarchy.
